VMA Following Issues

The magistrate study mandated by HJR 32 is over.  The official report, House Document No. 7, Publication year 2004, is available online.

John Carter, Director of Human Resources for the Office of the Executive Secretary, reports that he doesn’t know if or when the results will be implemented.

“What they do with it, we won’t know until the session is over,” says Carter. “They have to deal with the budget issue first. It’s too early to tell how much attention this will gather.”

Carter filled the position recently vacated by Catherine Agee.

The 9.3 percent shift differential pay increase met a setback when the Appropriations/Finance Committee failed to move the proposal forward.  "This is not the end,” says Richard Cox, who worked with  VMA board members, other magistrates and David Bailey Associates lobbyist Bonnie Atwood to obtain patrons for the amendment which would grant magistrates the 9.3 percent differential.

VMA also agreed to support

a pilot test project for a CD ROM Family Violence Training Module. When fully developed, the CD disc could be used by all magistrates to enhance knowledge on the subject and earn CLE credits.
